This is the traditional way to edge a blanket or a piece of fabric that may fray, but it can also be used to excellent effect as a decorative stitch. Bring your needle up at 1 (if you are creating an edging this will be as close to the edge of the fabric as you can safely place a stitch). Catch the loose thread on the fabric surface in your left hand, bring your needle down at 2 and then up at 3 catching the thread behind the needle and creating an L-shaped stitch. Pull the thread through, catch some of the loose thread in your left hand again, take the needle down at 4 and up at 5, creating another L-shaped stitch. Continue in this way until the stitching is of sufficient length, or you run short of thread. Make one final L-shape stitch then bring your needle down close to where you brought it up, catching the angle of the L in a small stitch. Tie off your thread on the wrong side.
Blanket Stitch can be used in a variety of ways to create a decorative effect.
